Shopping à la carte

Paris, fashion capital has something for everyone, in every district and in all price ranges. Strolling along famous avenues, through major department stores or little streets, you’ll discover fashion and interior deco that is luxury, high-tech and even gourmet.

Fashion and accessories

Lifestyle at concept stores

conceptThe first concept store opened in Paris over ten years ago. Since then, Colette has continued in the same pioneering spirit and many other stores have been similarly inspired. The same eclectic spirit for the rare and unexpected can be found in new stores where fashion goes beyond items of clothing. Merci, notably, opened on boulevard Beaumarchais in the Marais. This new 1,500 m² concept store with a socially responsible ethic offers a range of original items, including ready-to-wear garments made by emerging design talents (Forte Forte, Acne, Swildens), furniture, objects and utensils with timeless charm and practicality, and eco-friendly products. The store also features a literary cafe, a chic dining hall, and a perfumery. Most of the store’s profits are donated, via a foundation, to several associations that provide aid to women and children in Madagascar. L’Eclaireur presents a range of clothing trends in a more classic style. Fashion, accessories, toys, books and home decor feature amongst its five shops, including two for men, each with their own unique and pronounced style. The most recent is in the Marais; the one in rue Boissy d’Anglas mixes the fashion and design of the Italian Fornasetti, then there is a men’s store in the Marais and on the Champs-Elysées. A little further along the avenue des Champs-Elysées, Le66 is a huge retail space devoted to fashion, accessories, books and music.

Vintage trends

Vintage is back in force to become a major current day tren. Clothes and accessories from the 1940s and iconic pieces from the 1980s are experiencing a whole new lease of life. Numerous second-hand or cut-price retailers offer discounts of more than 40% to 60%. Paris is a worthy rival to London and its trendy Camden Town with an area of second-hand and vintage couture shops. Past collections from the greatest fashion brands can be had at addresses like the Palais Royal, where connoisseur Didier Ludot is one of the most celebrated Parisians.
At Etienne-Marcel, the most well-known second-hand clothes shop is Kiliwatch; in the Marais, there is a new shop with the cool name Hippy Market. Vintage fans will not fail to visit the shops of Violette and Léonie, Free’ P’ Star and the two shops in the Marais, or that of Odetta for haute couture for example. Bastille also has quality addresses such as Come on Eileen or En Ville.

Beauty

Perfumes to enjoy in exceptional places

parfum Paris elegance has always been synonymous with an exquisite taste for scent and perfumes. The most recent French perfumeur Francis Kurkdjian has his own perfume house. This exquisite establishment, devised by the famous ‘nose’ behind MaDame for Jean Paul Gaultier, Eau Noire Dior, presents his amazing world of fragrances in elegant refinement. Another sophisticated venue is The
Different Company, a contemporary haute perfume house founded in 2000 by ‘nose’ Jean-Claude Ellena (exclusive perfumeur to Hermès) and his daughter. Also of note, the return of lunx perfumes, available at Costes, with a selection of their famous original range. The relationship between nature and poetry is the main focus at Serge Lutens. Each bottle is an invitation to dream, from
‘Bornéo’, ‘Féminité du bois’ and ‘Louve’ to ‘Fille en aiguille’. Alternatively, try Annick Goutal’s seductively light and discreet ‘Eau d’Hadrien’ with its notes of Sicilian lemons. There’s a change of atmosphere and perfume over at the ‘Corner du Labo’, at Colette, where perfume laboratory assistants are on hand to help you create your own personal fragrance. You’ll find countless other enchanting places to discover, including L’Artisan Parfumeur, Nicolaï, the Editions de Parfums
Frédéric Malle, and of course Dyptique — the famous Parisian house for candles and perfume, which opened a new shop at the end of 2010.

Beauty

Natural beauty

Science and common sense are increasingly in agreement on this point: there’s no better way of achieving natural beauty than opting for nature itself and all of the benefits it offers — essential oils, soaps, shampoo and even organic sun products, plant-based preparations, and more. Brands such as Aesop, the Australian plant-based brand, with two addresses in Paris; Mademoiselle Bio, in the Motte-Picquet–Grenelle neighbourhood, and Korres, the Greek brand which now has two sales points in Paris, in the Marais and in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, are becoming new models of an art of living and consuming that is increasingly eco-friendly.

Top jewellers in Paris

bijou bijou More than boutiques, jewellers provide sumptuous showcases for their creations and clients. The rue de la Paix and the place Vendôme are home to the biggest names in the jewellery world. Louis Vuitton is soon to open its first world outlet for upscale jewellery here. The recently-refurbished Cartier boutique is also an integral part of this constantly-updated scene. So is Van Cleef & Arpels, which on the occasion of its one-hundredth anniversary reopened its historic boutique with a state-of-the-art flagship store. The historic Swiss timepiece brand Breguet has opened its largest store in the world here: 500 m² on two levels, a store on the ground floor and an exhibition
space on the first floor. Not forgetting Chanel Joaillerie, Dior Joaillerie, Boucheron, etc.

Sublime luggage and trunks

What would become of our clothes, jewellery and perfume if we had no way of keeping them safe on our travels? La Malle Bernard, on rue Hautefeuille in the 6th arrondissement, has been making bags and luggage since 1846. From the penderie (‘wardrobe’) trunk to the diplomatique suitcase, and the highly practical ‘cabine’ trunk, which tidies away easily under the couchette of a train or in the hold of a plane, the store offers everything you need to travel in style and peace of mind. Equally prestigious, Goyard offers a sophisticated range of trunks with an original touch that’s bound to delight even the most demanding of globetrotters, including a backgammon model containing everything you could need for a game on the move, the ‘cocktail’ for celebrations, and of course the
nez (‘nose’) trunk for perfume experts ... Other renowned establishments have designed items for anyone who feels that beauty makes the perfect travelling companion, such as La Maroquinerie Parisienne on rue Tronchet, and Lancel and Louis Vuitton on the Champs-Élysées.
