News

Paris is synonymous with fashion. There are more and more prestigious boutiques opening in the main shopping areas. Check out places around the major department stores near to Opéra, in the Haut Marais, the Palais Royal and of course on the Champs-Elysées, at Saint-Germain-des-Prés or along rue Saint-Honoré.

In brief

Paris is stepping up the pace and updating its fashion scene. The Champs-Elysées, the world’s most beautiful avenue has seen some prestigious arrivals. At the end of 2010, H&M launched a flagship store designed by Jean Nouvel, one of the most famous French architects, not far from the crystal palace showcase of the Swarovski brand, inaugurated in 2010. As for Abercrombie & Fitch, the famous American brand, a store is planned to open between now and May 2011, and rumour has it that a Levi flagship is expected to open at any time. In another district, the 2nd arrondissement, Cos, the upscale brand of H&M is opening a third outlet in Paris, in rue Montmartre. This opening comes soon after the inaugurations of its first boutiques in the rue des Rosiers (4th), in the Marais, and in rue de Passy (16th). The Swedish brand Acne, which already has an outlet at the Palais Royal (1st), is also opening a new ‘Studio’, planned for early in the New Year, not far from the concept store Merci, which has given a new impetus to the Haut Marais district. Finally, on the Left Bank, things are changing too: after the opening of the Burberry and Ralph Lauren flagships on boulevard Saint-Germain, the legendary Hermès brand takes up residence here! The new store of this luxury brand is quite exceptional.

The booming Opéra district

Not far from the Palais Garnier opera house, near to the big department stores – Printemps and Galeries Lafayette -, the Japanese megastore Uniqlo, chic and sober with affordable prices opened with 2,150 m² of bright and airy retail space in rue Scribe in 2009. Since then, there has been a huge wave of openings of major international brands: Apple has opened a second Parisian Apple Store here; the Spanish brand Desigual has opened its first Parisian flagship, Camper has opened its fourth Parisian outlet, and Nespresso has opened an even more luxurious showcase, just behind the Palais Garnier opera house.

Palais Royal, chic and cutting edge

The perfume maker Serge Lutens set the trend when he opened his perfume shop here in 1992, followed by the luxury shoe maker Pierre Hardy ten years later … Previously devoted to stamp collections and antiques, the magnificent galleries and arcades of the Palais Royal next to the rue Saint-Honoré, have become a centre for Parisian fashion. They now house glove maker Maison Fabre, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Rick Owens, as well as the doyen of Parisian vintage couture Didier Ludot, the self-proclaimed king of the little black dress. Latest arrivals include the ethnic fabrics of Franco-Danish brand Epice. The surrounding streets are just as interesting.
There is the flagship of the Maison Martin Margiela, the ready-to-wear brand Sandro and the only Kitsuné shop, the highly popular small Parisian label for fashion and electronic music.
